Katsuhira-en, was first built as Katsuhira Central Hospital in 1970 and rebuilt as an elder health care facility in 1989. Concrete block walls needed reconstruction and the art project was commissioned to rebuild it. The wall aims to be an elderly care facility “open” to a general society. There was a huge gap between the facility’s concept and the inherent function of a wall. The wall, Rio, by Oscar Satio Oiwa, was designed mainly using curved forms, covered with glass tiles. The curved forms and glass tile effects reflect various colors of sunlight. “Rio” turned out to be a wall everyone was tempted to get close to see. The project aims to promote pleasant hours as its various forms and lights stimulate residents’ spirit.
